November 27: Season 1 OVA 2/Episode 14
This episode was centered around a love letter that Hiro got at the start of the episode. While Hiro herself doesn’t appear very much, we see the character’s centered around her, Yuno, Miyako, Sae, and think about different scenarios with the love letter. So, now that we’ve watched our first episode of this watchalong, what was your general first impression with the episode?
I think, immediately, as the episode opens up in Yuno’s room, with her slowly waking up from bed and opening her curtains, walking down the stairs, I remembered why I love Shaft’s aesthetics so much. While my first reaction to the aesthetics was that the art looked old (granted the show first aired 13 or so years ago) the unique shaft aesthetics highly contrasted colors and shades are so stunning to look at. In the middle of the episode as well, I loved how Yuno’s dream during art history class was painted with Picasso’s color palette and style because the teacher was referencing Cubism. Of course, the backgrounds and transitions with different shapes were also very fun to see.
It’s been a while since I last watched Hidamari Sketch, but I was reminded quite quickly that Yoshinoya-sensei is best girl ^^ She has some great scenes this episode that capture why I like her so much, mainly her childish personality and obsession with romance.
Yeah, the characters were, as expected, so fun to watch. We see Sae so caught up in Hiro’s decision about the love letter, Yuno daydreaming and being flustered, and Miyako thinking about food at every moment. It’s really funny to see how true they are to their characters at any moment. And this episode accomplishes what OVAs are supposed to do, giving us a little bit more of the characters that we miss.
You’re ignoring me talking about the best girl?
One scene I didn’t really understand this episode was the one with Natsume. She said stuff about winning and losing sort of out of nowhere, so I’m assuming maybe it was referring to a previous episode? Do you have any idea?, Edy?
I also don’t really know. I guess that’s a problem with following real time like this. But hopefully as we continue on, we remember Natsume’s character a little better. Though I do remember that she really likes Sae.
I think in the beginning when I watched the first few episodes of Hidamari I didn’t really like Natsume, but I remember warming up to her as the show went on. She went from this unnecessary annoying rival to a cute tsundere character who’s actually quite enjoyable.
Going back to it, this episode had a lot of different funny moments in classic Hidamari fashion. I think my favorite scene was when Miyako and Yuno were talking about kissing. Yuno, of course, was super flustered for no reason, and Miyako, being the english genius that she is, responded that in the west “kisses” are called “mouth-to-mouth.” This type of simple dialogue that gives me slight smiles are one of the biggest reasons why I think this show is so enjoyable to me to watch in a very casual manner. Jun did you have a favorite scene?
Hm, I’d say my favorite scenes were the ones with Yoshinoya-sensei.
Though I will say that this episode’s bumper(the illustration in between commercial breaks halfway through the episodes) was quite funny. I don’t remember them leaving that much of an impression on me for Hidamari, but maybe I’m just not remembering that well.
Besides that, I don’t think there’s that much to talk about for this episode. Hidamari Sketch’s OVAs don’t particularly stand out from the rest of the series, instead I think they have all the elements that allow the main series to be so good, and the OVAs fit right in with them.
Next episode is the second half of episode 9 of season 2! We’ll be watching it and making a post of it on December 3rd!
